Digitized Journal Backfiles on Blackwell Synergy

We are undertaking a major digitization project to make the complete backfiles of up to 500 scholarly journals available online on Blackwell Synergy. This will provide libraries and their patrons with seamless online access to the content of Wiley-Blackwell journals, regardless of whether an article was published in 2006 or 1906. The program began in January 2006 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008. It will cover all disciplines and will comprise at least 6.5 million pages in total. All issues of each journal from Volume 1, Issue 1 to December 1996 are being digitized as part of the program.

Backfiles Title List

Follow the link below for the latest list of journals included in the program. The list, organized alphabetically by title and by subject, provides information for each journal backfile on its scope, pricing and production status. The title list is updated monthly as backfiles are published or approved for inclusion in the program.

Pricing and Licensing Options

All journal backfiles are priced individually. Institutions may license a single title, any selection of titles, all titles in the current Backfiles Title List or the complete backfile collection. All prices are for a one-time fee with archival rights, plus a small annual hosting and maintenance fee.

To license any individual title or small selection of titles, please contact backfiles@blackwellpublishing.com  providing: the journal backfiles you wish to order; your institution name, address, and phone number; your Blackwell customer number (if known); and your VAT number (if registered for VAT).

Discounts on the standard per-journal prices are available on larger orders and for institutions wishing to commit to the whole program. For further information on these special discounts, please contact your Journals Account Manager

Archival Rights to Journal Backfiles

All journal backfiles in the program are licensed with archival rights. For any journal published by Blackwell Publishing on behalf of a society, professional association or any other third party, Blackwell has the contractual right to maintain the journal backfile on Blackwell Synergy and to provide access to it to licensed institutions in perpetuity.

Archival rights to Volumes Published since 1997

Institutions which are licensing a journal backfile and which wish to fill any gaps in their holdings of the more recent volumes will be able to license archival rights to those missing volumes.

Platform and Format

The backfiles are accessible through the appropriate journal page on Blackwell Synergy. Articles are posted in PDF format with XML-based headers, abstracts and references. The full-text of articles is searchable with search terms highlighted in the PDF.

Incomplete Backfiles

Sourcing of backfile volumes for digitization can be difficult for some journals and for older material in particular. Rather than delaying publication we will publish some journal backfiles with a maximum of 2% of issues missing while we locate those issues for digitization. In any such case we will clearly identify the journal backfile and the missing issues and will seek the help of customers in tracking them down.

If you spot any missing issues or articles within a digitized backfile which we have not ourselves identified, please let us know by contacting libraryinfo@blackwellpublishing.com.

Selected backfiles available at no charge

A number of journals provide access to their backfiles on Blackwell Synergy at no charge, usually in cases where a society or funding body has paid for the cost of digitization. Free backfiles are indicated by the free content icon on Blackwell Synergy.
