Objectives:

In Spain, there are more than 55,000 deads each year as a direct result of smoking. Every day, 100,000 young people become addicted to snuff in the world. Thus, smoking is a serious public health problem whose causes are preventable. It is therefore critical awareness of young people to end this addiction. Health professionals must undertake to help promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the population. It is also proposed as measurable activity in the subject group of general Physiology in nursing degree the development of an anti-smoking campaign for primary care centres.

Materials:

Groups of 5 students had to design an informative poster to describe the physiological alterations caused by smoking. In order to evaluate the results, the activity was performed in a poster session workshop. Each group explained their campaign and answered questions posed by an examining board composed by members of the group of Physiology and health professionals. The work was evaluated based on originality, scientific rigor and oral presentation skills of students. It was also organized a round table in the classroom with the aim of exchanging views and experiences among students and teachers involved. Finally, in order to promote ability for self analysis and appreciation of others' work, students chose the best campaign that increased the final mark by 1 point.

Results:

The results obtained by the students were positive in all cases with marks between 6.3 and 9.3 being the average score of 7.4 ± 0.84. The results obtained with this activity showed the usefulness of this tool used for motivation and meaningful learning in the area of Physiology.

Conclusions:

The most difficult point in this project was to create a rubric for an objective evaluation. Nevertheless, this activity was good accepted by the students. The most of these campaigns were really shocking, and made some of the University staff, and also students, tried to stop smoking.
