Question:

Does a moderate Nordic-Walking-Training (8 weeks, 3 times a week, 60 minutes each) provoke significant changes in cardio-respiratory kinetics with elderly, male, non-insulin-taking Diabetes Type II patients?

Methodology:

8 male volunteers (age: 63 ± 8 years; height: 179 ± 7 cm) were subjected to dynamic workload (WL) changes between 30 and 80 Watt and maximal oxygen uptake (V'O2peak) and maximal WL (WLmax) was determined. Gas exchange was assessed breath-by-breath and heart rate (HR) was measured using ECG. For the calculation of muscular V'O2-kinetics (Mpeak) from respiratory V'O2-kinetics (Rpeak) a two compartment model comprising the exercising and non-exercising parts of the body was used.

HR-kinetics (Hpeak) as well as Rpeak and Mpeak were calculated applying cross correlation functions between WL and the mentioned parameters. Higher amplitudes of Hpeak, Mpeak and Rpeak indicate faster system responses.

Results:
Conclusion:

The results show that the Nordic-Walking-Training has no significant impact on Hpeak, Rpeak, Mpeak, V'O2peak and WLmax.

Therefore, it is to be concluded that the moderate Nordic-Walking-Training has no effect on the cardio-respiratory system.
