OPPONENT PLAYER POSITION INDUCES LATERAL DEVIATION OF JUMP TRAJECTORY IN BASKETBALL PLAYERS

Visual distractors are known to affect the trajectory of a motor task directed toward a target; in a previous study we have demonstrated that the position of an opposing player induces a deviation of the trajectory of a basket shot performed by another player. The aim of the present experiment was to evaluate the effect of the position of an opposing player on the trajectory of the jump of a basketball player during a basket shot. Five young basketball players were asked to perform sixty basket shots from a central position behind the 3 points line of a regular basketball ground, while an opponent player stayed in front of them alternatively in a center, left or right position and with both arms stretched up. The trajectory of the head during the shot was recorded with a computerized system and the angular deviation of the jump direction from the vertical direction was computed. The results showed that the jump direction deviated toward the opposite side from the opponent player's side, despite the opponent player was at a distance such as he could not physically intercept the ball. The arrival position of the ball at the basket also was affected by the position of the opponent player, with a deviation toward the opposite side. These results confirm that during a basketball match the players can have an effect as visual distractors, but further studies are necessary to find what game conditions could make such distractors significant for the athletic performance.
