CORRELATIVE NETWORK ANALYSIS IN HOMOGENEOUS AND NON-HOMOGENEOUS NETWORKS OF GASTRIC ANTRUM
Abstract number: P347

Gastric smooth muscle generates pronounced spontaneous activity which is linked to the activity of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). Using four-dimensional correlative network analysis we could demonstrate in a previous study, that hormones increase cell to cell coupling and total excitability. Using network analysis in the ganglia and plexus myentericus we observed cell clusters of stronger or weaker phasic activity. These clusters had distances between 90 and 200 mm and were mostly in phase with the gastric smooth muscle activity. Some of these clusters however were of mixed nature in terms of the phase shift between the signals. Since the distances were in the range of 2 mm, the inversion of the signals might be due to the existence of interneurones. From these cernels, signals spread to different regions of the tissue and mostly to structures like microvessels. It could be observed, that the microvessels were activated (constricted) when the gastric muscle was dilated and vice versa. We conclude that this is an important mechanism which keeps the total gastric vascular resistance constant during peristaltic contractions.
