BACKGROUND:

many patients do not respond to monotherapy for the obesity treatment. Diet, drugs, psychotherapy or bariatric surgery, are only short-term treatments and they do not guarantee a stable results in the middle and long term. The aim of this study is the combination of nutritional and psychological therapies in the treatment of obesity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

a total of 75 obese patients (49 females, 26 males) were recruited. First, the clinical, nutritional status and laboratory tests of all subjects were evaluated. In addition, a psychological evaluation has been carried out, through the administration of psychometric tests. Subjects were instructed to followan integrated therapeutic model consisting of an individual low caloric diet, aerobic exercise and paper diary in order to identify nutritional errors and lifestyle changes.

RESULTS:

in 2 years of follow-up, it is observed a low weight of 8–10% in 51 patients (68%).The drop-out have been of 12%, of which (50%) was obese-BED (Binge Eating Disorders).

CONCLUSIONS:

the study shows that the psychonutritional approach is effective for the improvement of the intrinsic psychopathologic problem and for middle-term weight loss maintenance. We believe that more number of subjects should be and by long-term follow-up. encourage to offer this kind of therapy in the common clinical practice.
