THE EFFECT OF CINNAMON ON GASTRIC EMPTYING, POSTPRANDIAL LIPAEMIA, GLYCAEMIA AND APPETITE RESPONSES TO HIGH-FAT BREAKFAST

Objective: Dietary fat ingestion causes unfavourable alterations in postprandial metabolism and may lead to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) has been suggested as a dietary component that could delay gastric emptying (GE) of fat and consequently reduce postprandial lipaemia. The current study aimed to determine the effect of 3g cinnamon on GE of a high-fat meal, postprandial lipaemic and glycaemic responses as well as appetite sensations and subsequent food intake. Methods: A single-blind randomised crossover study assessed nine healthy, young adults. GE rate was determined using the 13C octanoic acid breath test. A high-fat pancake meal (624kcal; 46g fat) was ingested with 3g cinnamon or wheat flour (placebo) capsules. Breath, blood samples and subjective appetite ratings were collected in the fasted and 6-h postprandial period. At 6-h an ad libitum buffet meal was provided. Statistical analysis was by paired t-tests, with significance at P<0.05. Results: 3g cinnamon did not affect GE rate or area under the curve for appetite sensations. There was a trend towards increased appetite sensations for cinnamon throughout the postprandial state which reached significance at t = 90 min (hunger), t = 330 min (desire to eat) and t = 120 min (fullness) without affecting subsequent food intake. Postprandial lipaemic and glycaemic responses will be analysed. Conclusion: Cinnamon supplementation did not change GE rate or food intake. We find no evidence for 3g cinnamon in prevention or management of CVD and T2D through the modification of gastric emptying.
