PUPS SELENIUM LEVELS AND GPX ACTIVITY AFTER ETHANOL EXPOSITION.

Selenium (Se) is an important micronutrient necessary in the synthesis of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPX). The aim of this study was to elucidate whether chronic ethanol consumption by adult female rats during pregnancy and lactation, had effects on selenium levels and GPX activity in their descents. We used female Wistar rats (250 g) divided into two groups: Alcoholic group (AG) treated with ethanol in tap water and basic diet during gestation and lactation, and control group (CG) fed with tap water and basic diet. The study was performed in pups of 21 days. The pups of both groups were anaesthetized and liver, heart and brain removed, washed and frozen at -80ordm;C. To determinate GPX activity in these organs we used a colorimetric method. Se levels were measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (EAA).
Selenium levels were significantly lower in liver, heart and brain in AG groups, however, GPX activity was significantly higher in liver and cortex. In GA hearts GPX activity was lower than in CG. So, we concluded that the ethanol consumption by dams during pregnancy and lactation affects significantly pups selenium levels and GPX activity in the organs studied.
