THE UNIFIED TEACHING OF PHYSIOLOGY IN THE DEGREES REGULATED BY THE EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE
Abstract number: W09
Pharmacy, Veterinary Science, Odontology, Nursing and Midwifery are degrees which have been incorporated in the branch of "Health Sciences", as defined by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, for which the European Directive 2005/36/EC applies.
These degrees should include 60 credits (out of a total of 240) designed from basic subjects included in the general listing of the 5 proposed branches. Of those 60 credits, at least 36 should belong to the field of Health Sciences, a branch in which Physiology is a basic subject. The basic subjects can result in courses of a minimum extension of 6 credits. The degree of pharmacist will consist of a five-year training period during which at least four years of full-time theoretical and practical teaching will have been carried out. The training for the degree in Veterinary Science will include a total of at least five years of full-time theoretical and practical studies. The training for the degree of odontologist will include a total of at least five years of full-time theoretical and practical studies. The training for the degree in Nursing for general citizens will include, at least, a three-year study period or 4,600 hours of theoretical and clinical training; the duration of the theoretical training should be at least one third of the general training period, and the clinical training should be at least half of the general training period. The training for the degree in Midwifery should include, at least, one of the following possibilities: a) specific full-time training as midwife for, at least, three years of theoretical and practical studies, or b) a specific eighteen-month full-time period of training as midwife which should never be equivalent to the training for Nursing for general citizens.
On the other hand, the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation establishes that in order to achieve the general goals, the curriculum for these degrees must include a set of specific contents which, on the basis of the scientific method, guarantees the student's acquisition of knowledge, skills and criteria on the functioning of a healthy organism (healthy animal, in the case of Veterinary Science). It seems appropriate to try to coordinate the teaching task, by means of a greater level of concreteness, and by defining the main objectives of learning for each system, so that they constitute the indispensable minimum of the teaching of Physiology in the above mentioned Degrees.
