European Journal of Philosophy

Edited by:
Robert Stern

For much of its recent past philosophy in Europe has been pursued in disparate schools. Even within a given school, exchanges between individuals in different European nations have been severely limited. In view of a growing desire to overcome current insularity, the European Journal of Philosophy aims to constitute a forum to which all philosophers, both inside and outside Europe, can turn to rediscover the diversity and variety of the European tradition. Maintaining a healthy respect for the existing variety, the European Journal of Philosophy sets out to constitute a platform that will enhance exchanges between individuals within a given tradition and encourage the exchange of ideas between traditions.

European Journal of Philosophy is proud to maintain a decision turn-around time of 8 weeks for all submitted manuscripts. Please see Author Guidelines for more details.

2008 EJP Annual Lecture
The European Journal of Philosophy annual lecture for 2008 will be on Friday 20th June at 5.00pm, at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe Universität, Grüneburgplatz 1 (Campus Westend), R. 411, Frankfurt.

The lecture will be given by Onora O' Neill and is entitled 'Ethics for Communication'.

Abstract
We think of ourselves as living in an era of richer and deeper possibilities of communication.  These are taken to reflect developments in information technology, in deliberative aspects of democracy and in cultural globalisation. Yet, curiously, the   ethical issues   now taken to be important in this area emphasise aspects of one-way transmission or dissemination, rather than genuine communication.  Three examples can illustrate the point: the emphasis in discussions of press freedom on freedom of expression; the emphasis in public life on freedom of information or transparency; the emphasis in discussions of privacy on conceptions of data protection.  These shifts reflect common underlying views: each assumes that what matters is not communication, but the transfer and control of informational content, thereby marginalising significant ethical and epistemic issues.  A genuine focus on communication requires us to focus on speech acts, and so on a wider range of norms of both sorts.

All are welcome to attend the lecture, which will be followed by a drinks reception hosted by Wiley-Blackwell.

It is clear from the numbers of the European Journal of Philosophy so far published that the admirable objectives of the journal are being most successfully achieved. The contributors are of the highest quality and the range of authors is appropriately wide. One opens the journal with great expectations - which are regularly fulfilled. The editors and publishers are to be most warmly congratulated. "
